NEW ALBUM THE ALLFATHER AWAKENS DUE 2ND OCTOBER
Horses? Never been on one in my puff. Norse mythology? Not my area of expertise. Meaning I wasn’t sure I was going to meld with ‘Eight Legs of Thunder’, the latest single from Swedish melodic death metallers Amon Amarth, which is inspired by Sleipnir, the legendary eight-legged steed of Oden. But once I was in the saddle, it was a different story.
Loved the drums. Loved the piercing riffs. Loved the vocal, which is delivered by Johan Hegg in the style of that guy who does those movie trailers which always begin with “In a world…”.
Sticking with the theme, maybe it’s because I’m Scottish – actually, it’s 100% because I’m Scottish – that the lyrics to ‘Eight Legs…’ reminded me of Braveheart. “It is time, my trusted steed /
Together, we ride, together, we bleed / End is nigh, so ride like the wind”. If Mel had played this to his troops before the Battle of Falkirk, they would have won it.
The only disappointment? The band’s UK (ahem) tour only invades as far north as Manchester. So if you want to hear upcoming long player ‘The Allfather Awakens’ in the flesh, you’re going to have to hoof it down there.
